Purpose of this course:

To develop an understanding of the distinguishing characteristics of nuclear power and the regulatory and safety requirements in nuclear construction as required by a supervisor in order to promote and maintain a strong nuclear safety culture.

Course duration: 2-days

Assessment:

An assignment of 1000 to 2000 words written in the context of the learner's workplace against a set of structured questions.

Course Content:

What is special about nuclear power and how that impacts upon own area of responsibility

  • Features of nuclear technology that make it different from other thermally-powered means of generating electricity
  • How the distinguishing features of nuclear power have contributed to one major nuclear incident
  • The role and responsibilities of the supervisor in monitoring the distinguishing features of nuclear power in own area of responsibility

How the Nuclear Industry is regulated and the consequences of non-compliance

  • The roles and responsibilities of two regulatory bodies involved in nuclear power
  • How activities on site are regulated
  • The purpose of the nuclear site licence
  • The role of the supervisor in ensuring regulatory compliance

The principles and application of excellence and error prevention in nuclear construction

  • How the supervisor ensures that construction schedules are realistic and understood by the team
  • The role of the supervisor in ensuring that personnel have the training, tools and equipment required for the creation and maintenance of a safe working environment
  • How supervisors ensure that all personnel taking part in construction operations are suitably qualified and experienced to carry out their work
  • A range of tools for preventing errors in your work
  • How to apply nuclear new build error prevention tools

The role as a leader in promoting and maintaining nuclear safety

  • The standards expected of supervisors with regard to safety, quality and productivity (SQP)
  • How to promote a strong nuclear safety culture within the work team
