Purpose of the course:

IOSH Managing Safely in Construction will ensure that legal requirements of Health and Safety, including the role and function of the Health and Safety Enforcement Authorities are appreciated and understood.

It will ensure that management are fully aware of their own and the company's role in the correct provision for Health and Safety at work.

It will provide management with a practical appreciation of what is meant by a safe system of work and will enable management to carry out a comprehensive Safety Audit on returning to work, undertake Risk Assessments and introduce appropriate Hazard Controls.

Course duration: 4-days

Course Description:

IOSH Managing Safely in Construction has been developed by Phoenix Training Solutions Ltd and has been tailored to the Construction Industry. This course will increase participants' understanding of health and safety standards and international best practice in this environment.

This IOSH Managing Safely in Construction course is a highly participative course which will provide Tutor-led discussions, case studies, exercises, and videos which are contextualised to the UK Construction sector.

Day 1

  • Overview of construction Safety in the UK
  • Reasons for safety management
  • Health & Safety Legal System, Regulations & Enforcement
  • Health, Safety and the Manager - CDM 2015
  • Safe Systems of Work (including Permit to Work and Job Method Statements)

Day 2

  • Risk Assessment and Controlling Hazards
  • Working at height: Scaffolding, Mobile Towers, Loading Platforms and Ladders
  • Fire & Hot Work
  • Work equipment: Machinery Hazards, Mobile work equipment & Mechanical Plant
  • Site Traffic and Movement of people on site

Day 3

  • Lifting Equipment and Moving Loads
  • Confined Spaces
  • Excavations and Trench Work
  • Electricity
  • Site Traffic and Movement of people on site
  • First Aid - RIDDOR, Emergency Planning
  • Accident Causation and Investigation
  • Monitoring safety - proactive / reactive

Day 4

  • Welfare on site
  • Managing risks to health: Hazardous substances, Asbestos, Noise, Vibration, Manual Handling, Workplace Stress, Harassment and Bullying
  • Concrete & Formwork
  • Protecting the Environment
