ECITB / IOSH Managing Safely in the Engineering Construction Industry 

(ECITB module 4A) 1 Day refresher course

                    

Overview:

This course has been produced by the ECITB as a result of requests from employers across the Engineering Construction Industry (ECI). The content has been developed by a subject specialist to meet a specification agreed by an Industry Working Group made up of employer representatives from the Engineering Construction Industry.

Target Audience:

The course is aimed at Managers and Supervisors from the Engineering Construction Industry who passed the ECITB's Supervisor Training Module 4 - Safety, Health & the Environment (IOSH Managing Safely in the Engineering Construction Industry) course, and who hold an IOSH Managing safely in the Engineering Construction Industry certificate issued less that three years prioir to taking this refresher course.

Course aims:

The aim is to enable an individual to understand the current best practice and legal requirements for Managing Safely in the Engineering Construction Industry.

Learning objectives:

On completion of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Describe Supervisor's responsibilities / duties
  • Describe recent changes in legislation and best practice
  • Describe the skills necessary for Managing Safely

Certification:

This who successfully complete the course and the end-of-course assessment will receive a Certificate of Training from the ECITB and eligible delegates will receive and IOSH Managing Safely in the Engineering Construction Industry certificate provided their current certificate was issued less than three years before they attend the refresher course.

IOSH certificates are only available to those holding an existing ECITB / IOSH Certificate which is less than three years old at the time of the ocurse. The ECITB / IOSH certificate can be renewed every three years by attending this course providing these conditions are met.

Course format and Duration:

The course is delivered as a bespoke training course in a training room environment over one day. There is an end-of-course assessment to be completed by delegates.

Eligible delegates will undertake an end-of-course assessment which, if passed, will result in an IOSH Managing Safely in the Engineering Construction Industry certificate beingg issued provided esisting IOSH certificates are less than three years old.

(ECITB Supervisor Training Module 4)

This course has six main strands:

  • Legislation
  • Risk Assessment
  • Common Hazards & Environment
  • Safety Management Systems
  • Accident & Incident Reporting
  • The Supervisor's Role in the above

Purpose of sessions:

  • Understand the importance of managing health and safety at work
  • Understand the contributory factors which can cause accidents
  • Increase awareness of personal safe behaviours and the need to promote safe behaviours within the work team
  • Recognise the vital role that a supervisor plays in the overall H&S management process

 Course Duration: 4-Day

Day 1

  • Reasons for Managing Safely: Moral, Legal & Financial
  • The Legal Framework
  • Health and Safety at Work
  • Supervisor's Responsibility
  • HSE Enforcement

Day 2

  • Hazards & Risks: Risk Assessment, types & process, Hierarchy of Control
  • Permit to Work Systems: Issue, receipt, clearance, cancellation and application
  • Health & Safety Management Systems: Policies, culture and 4 C's, measuring performance, active and reactive monitoring, workplace inspections& safety audits, communication & consultation, CDM 2015 & Offshore Safety cases (as relevant).

Day 3

  • Investigating Accidents & Incidents: Barriers to reporting, importance of investigating & reporting, accident causation & the domino theory, spheres of influence, human failure, investigation process, RIDDOR
  • Common Hazards in the workplace: The top 5 identified by the delegates, stress, COSHH, electricity, working at height, noise & vibration.

Day 4

  • Common Hazards in the workplace:  Manual handling, fire, mechanical & non-mechanical associated with machinery, confined spaces, excavations, site vehicles, lifting operations.
  • Protecting the Environment: Aspects & Impacts, waste control, emergencies & spills.
  • IOSH Assessment: For Managing Safely in the Engineering Construction Industry
