Purpose of sessions:

  • Recognise the stages of team development and appreciate the role of the Supervisor in team development
  • To introduce the concept of Emotional Intelligence for Supervisor's to understand the value in demonstrating EI
  • To appreciate how to develop trust and respect within the team and understanding team dynamics in action 
  • Develop an understanding of the Supervisor's obligations under Employment Law
  • Develop an understanding of the Supervisor's under organisational requirements 
  • Develop an awareness of negotiation skills and recognise the value of effective negotiating to achieve a win/win
  • Develop an understanding of the principles of management reports
  • Recognise the role of the Supervisor in managing diversity in the workplace
  • Understand the process and advantages of effective delegation

Course duration: 2-day

Day 1

Session 1: Team Development - Outcomes

  • Have a better understanding of the life cycle of a team
  • Be able to recognise the stages of team development and how change can impact on the team
  • Know the supervisor's role in developing and guiding the team

Session 2: Emotional Intelligence - Outcomes

  • Have a better understanding of Emotional Intelligence (EI)
  • Be able to identify how to demonstrate empathy, verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Recognise the value of using EI in the workplace

Session 3: Team Development Exercise - Outcomes

  • Understand how to develop and maintain good working relationships with managers, colleagues and team members
  • Appreciate the Supervisor's approach and support for the team on working relationships
  • Determine how to develop trust and respect in the team

Day 2

Session 1: Employment Law - Outcomes

  • Be able to identify the basics of Employment Law which relate to the Supervisor's role
  • Understand the impact of Employment Legislation on labour planning. Recruitment and selection
  • Know how to apply the organisations's Discipline and Grievance Procedures

Session 2: Negotiation Skills - Outcomes

  • Have a better understanding of the methods of negotiation
  • Be able to identify key skills in effective negotiation
  • Describe the key elements of effective negotiation

Session 3: Basic Management Reports - Outcomes

  • Be able to explain the purpose of management reporting
  • Recognise an appropriate structure which meets the business needs of reporting information
  • Can select the right information to include in a report

Session 4: Team Considerations

  • Have a better understanding of role of the supervisor when managing diversity
  • Can identify good and bad practice in effective delegation
  • Understand the importance of effective delegation
